About Alabama Department of Corrections

In 1819, the Alabama was finally permitted to join the union. Since it joined the union in 1819, it would be another 2 decades before the state would decide to have a correctional process/structure within your state departments.

The civilians in the 1820s to 1830s would start rioting for some change. The change they were looking for ways to start punishing those who would do wrong within the state, i.e. breaking laws.

This is when the Alabama Department of Corrections came to be. In the beginning of the development, the state saw an influx of jobs being created. These jobs were not just for the new agency, but it also had to do with construction and other work-related fields as well.

As time went on and even now, the DOC employs a little over 3,400 people that takes care of the 26,000 offenders daily. However, you should note that this number does change constantly as the DOC grows and as more people come into a state facility or leave a state facility.
