One department of the state government that is responsible for all inmates within the state is known as the Alaska Department of Corrections. This department solely works in corrections. Corrections can consist of the prison system, probation, or parole.
Current commander in chief of the DOC of Alaska is Dignity Williams. Mr. Williams can be found in the office in Juneau or in the office in Anchorage dependent on what is going on within the department.
The foundation of this department started back on the third day of January in 1959. Before 1959, Alaska did not have a corrections department. Which meant they did not have any sort of prison system where people who broke the law would be punished.
Fast forward to 2005, Alaska made a report that consisted of out of all their offenders, that 30% of them were not even located in the state of Alaska that these offenders were in a facility in Arizona. This facility in Arizona was not operated by the state, but by a company known as CCA.
Skip to 2009, when the Department of Corrections then decided they needed to transfer these offenders from the place in Arizona to another place in another city in Arizona. Only for them to then transfer back those same offenders three years later to their permanent home here in Alaska.
