The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department was first established around the late 1700s and was in the same location until they built the new sheriff’s department and included the Maricopa County Estrella Jail.
The Maricopa County Estrella Jail was in constant operation from the time it was built in 1845 to 1971. The Maricopa County Estrella Jail closed its doors until the mid-1980s.
