About Colorado Department of Corrections

When it comes to the state department in Colorado, they also have a Department of Corrections. Like all other state DOC’s, the DOC in the state of Colorado is also in charge of the operation of the state prisons and the inmates that come with them.

As of 2020, the Colorado Department of Corrections has 20 facilities that they oversee daily. This number includes the 7 facilities that they are only associated with and the 3 facilities that they contract out to other organizations to run. Those facilities are known as private prisons.

When an inmate is brought into the Colorado Department of Corrections, they will need to undergo through the DRDC. The DRDC is where an inmate will find out what security level they are, put any and all needs that they may have, and then ultimately be placed in a facility that will best be suited for them.

As of 2020, the Colorado Department of Corrections has abolished the death penalty. This means, if an inmate gets charged and convicted of a capital crime, he or she will be immediately sent to the Sterling facility with a closed custody security level.
