In 1789, the Mississippi Department of Corrections was finally formed. It was a long time coming. To be honest, Mississippi was the state that paved the way for many of the other states to develop their very own Department of Corrections.
To be completely transparent, Natchez was the first-ever facility that the Department of Corrections in Mississippi ever used. It was in use for many, upon many years after it was first opened.
It would end up taking the Mississippi Department of Corrections about 5 decades before it was officially time for them to build another facility. The first facility the department would ever build was called the dividers. This facility would finally be done with construction in the 1840s. The facility cost the state approximately $75,000. This new facility would be allowed to house up to 200 offenders.
The Department of Corrections in Mississippi is accredited and even licensed by the ACA.
