The Department of Public Safety here in North Carolina is unique. It is a division in the state government of North Carolina, but it has a different name than most of the divisions. 

Many other states will call the division that is responsible for their corrections, the department of corrections, but North Carolina has opted to call their division the Department of Public Safety. 

Why did they do that? They decided to call it the Department of Public Safety just because that is what their main priority is. Yes, you have heard that right. It is all about the public safety for the department. They do handle the corrections aspect of the state, but with them handling that it also keeps the other communities around safe and secure as well.
